today in class we took a test. the test was all multiple choice which helped the test to be a little bit easier. the test was not that hard and was overall a simple test. I am not worried at all about this test and I feel like did really good. hopefully I got a high A. this is our last test until midterms. this made me realize we do not have much longer until midterms. once we have midterms there will not be much time to get your grade back up if you failed them. I need to start cracking down on studying so I can finish this semester comfortably and not have to worry over Christmas break.

Attitudes toward immigrants
- immigration concerns in EU
1. population growth in the EU is fueled by immigration from other regions of the world, a trend disliked by many europeans
- Peoples biggest fears are that the host country's culture will be lost because immigrants.....
1. adhere to different religions
2. speak different languages
3. practice different food and other cultural habits

- Hostility to immigrants has become a central plank/backbone of some political parties in some European countries
1. immigrants blamed for crime, unemployment rates, high welfare costs, etc...

"Changing U.S. Immigration"
- Then United States plays a special role in then study of international migration
- The United States has had three main eras of immigration
- Most Africans were forced to migrate to the United States as slaves
- Between 1820 and 1920, approximately 32 million people immigrated to the United States
- Among European countries, Germany has sent the largest number of immigrants to the United States
- Immigration to the United States dropped sharply in the 1930s and 1940s, during the Great Depression and WW2. Number steadily increased beginning in the 1950s then surged to really high levels during the 21st century
- Reason fro immigration remains the same: rapid population growth has limited prospects for economic advancement at home

In class we listened to a podcast. First the podcast talked about ASYLUM, which is what people claim so they can live in America legally. We started ASYLUM after Jews came over on the SS. Saint Louis to escape the nazis. We rejected them because they didn’t have the proper paperwork to come to America. The Jews went down the coast of Central America trying to escape the nazis but could not gain acceptance from the countries. They went back to Europe and were eventually killed as nazi Germany expanded in size. After this happened the U.S. started asylum so people could escape their countries and have a safe place to stay. Once you claim asylum you have to give a valid reason on why you escaped your country. Once approved you can start to become a legal U.S. citizen.

Today in class we talked about migration and the political policies put on immigration. After discussing the immigration policies, we all came to a common agreement that we do not want every illegal immigrant to come to our country, but we also do not want a complete ban on immigrants. Talking about our political views made me realize that we need to stay opened minded and accept peoples differences. we are all different and entitled to our opinions.

- Migration
Where are migrants distributed?
Where do people migrate within a country?
Why do people migrate?
Why do migrants face obstacles?
- Mobility is generalized term that refers to all type of movement
- Short-term repetitive acts of mobility are refered to as circulation
- Permanent move to a new locations constitutes migration
Ravenstein's law for the distance that migrants typically move
- most relocate with the same country
- long distance migrants to other countries head for major centers of economic activity

Today we took a quiz. The quiz was about the video we watched called "200 years in 4 minutes." The quiz was easy but I feel like I messed up on one or two questions. The quiz asked a lot about what stage a country is in based on RNI so if you knew what RNI was you should have gotten a good grade. If I could retake this quiz again I would most likely look over my work because I never look over my work once I finish. It's a bad habit I have but with time I can perfect it and become a better test taker. Hopefully I got a good grade.

Today in class we watched “200 years in 4 minutes.” The video explained the progression of all the countries throughout the Industrial Revolution. Most countries improved there medical systems, technology, housing, and economy in just over 50 years while the African countries have not progressed at all. After 100 years the US started to reach stage 3 and we started to improve our systems a lot. Now after 200 years we have become one of the most powerful and technologically advanced places on Earth. We have a great Economy and most of our population in America lives somewhat comfortably. The video taught me things I have never even thought of, and made me realise how thankful we should be to live in US.

In class we went over our test and talked about the key issues on it. Overall I did good on the test finishing it with an 87. I cannot wait for the next test so I can hopefully get an A on it. I am doing pretty good in your class except I forget to do blogs here and there. I will make sure that I do my blogs and that I will not forget. I think I need to invest in a planner so I don't forget to do blogs.

today, we took a test. I felt i did decent but I didn’t know a few questions. I found most of the questions easy but I feel like I could have done a little bit better. The cia.gov questions were the easiest in my opinion, I found those questions super quick. The second section of the test where we had to fill in the blanks stumped me a little. It took me a little bit longer than usual to find the answer. At the end of the test where we had to match the population pyramid with the right question was a little hard. Those questions were probably the hardest. At the end of the test we had to draw cartoons and draw as many as we could. I started to run out of ideas and couldn’t figure out what I wanted to draw next but overall I thought the test was good.

Today in class we went over what will be on the test, and how to efficiently find things on the CIA World Factbook. I am feeling pretty good about the test but some of the contents are a little confusing, if I study and search around a little more then I should get a good dead’s. After we talked about the test, you told us about the movies you were in, and what you did to help with the movie. I thought it was pretty awesome that my teacher helped work on Home Alone because it’s my favorite movie but I was more impressed with all the famous people you got to meet. I could only wish meeting these people one day. When you said you have met Morgan Freeman, Kevin Bacon, Harrison Ford, etc... I was amazed. These people are some of the best actors in the world and you got to meet them and work with them for months at a time. After all, today was a pretty interesting day in class but also a pretty awesome one.

Yesterday in class we mainly just watched videos about population pyramids and TEDEd talks. We watched a TEDEd talk where a woman who was a model went into a deep thought. She walked on the stage as if she was walking and doing a photo shoot. As she changed into casual clothes she changed the perspective in which people saw her. She made people realize that not everyone is looked at the same. She made the people realize that we are privileged due to the way we look and what color we are. She then discussed getting pulled over by a cop that let her go just because she was pretty, white, and privileged. This made her realize that our appearance influences the decisions of others. By the end of the speech she brought up the point that if it was a black person wearing baggy clothes they would be harassed and told to get out just because they don’t have pretty white skin. I didn’t really agree with this but I guess some people do.

we use population pyramids to analyze the growth or fertile, mortality, and migration in cities or countries. Males are always on the left side of the pyramids and females are always on the right. the populations are in 5 year bands so from 0-4, 5-9, 10-14 ETC. There are 3 basic shapes to these graphs
The X-Mas Tree, developing nation
- growth rates are slow
- birth rates are high
- short life expectancy
The Box, developed nation (slow growth)
- low infant mortality rate
- slow population growth
- long life expectancy
The Cup, developed nation (negative growth)
- Slow birth rate
- shrinking population
- long life expectancy

Today in class we didn't do anything. We talked about our grades and checked if we made any mistakes on our blogs. We also went over all of the confusion amongst our class' grades. My grade is a D due to incomplete blogs and the blogs were not long enough. I made sure I was caught up on everything and I would say that im pretty glad we went over the blogs because it opened my eyes a little bit. It made me realize I need to complete every blog to its full entirety. I’m glad we got to talk about our class grades, and I’m glad we got to go over semester exams. I was kind of stressed about the semester exams but now that we went over them I’m not as stressed/scared about them. I will make sure that I complete all my blogs and I will make sure that I get good grades on my test.

5 facts
Protestant 46.5%, Roman Catholic 20.8%, Jewish 1.9%, Mormon 1.6%, other Christian 0.9%, Muslim 0.9%, Jehovah's Witness 0.8%, Buddhist 0.7%, Hindu 0.7%, other 1.8%, unaffiliated 22.8%, don't know/refused 0.6%
The United States has one of the most diverse populations when it comes to a religious meaning so it gives off a good amount of religious freedom.
-Israel Terrorism 2.)
Israel has two terrorist groups which leads to emigration of this country.
Emigration and immigration can affect a countries population.
Israel has two terrorist groups which leads to emigration of this country.
Emigration and immigration can affect a countries population.
Population 3.)
Population of the United Kingdom; 65,648,100
Obesity in Nauru and the United States 4.)
61% of Nauru's population is Obese, surprisingly the United States is ranked 12th in the world with 36.20% of the population being Obese.
Dominant sex 5.)
The dominant sex in Brazil is male.
I found each of these facts interesting because a lot of these facts play a big factor in migration, and population. I found it surprising that the United States is 22.8% unaffiliated with a religion meaning they're Atheist. The second fact relates to population because Israels terrorist groups cause mass murder to their population/country causing there population to decrease. The third fact just relates to the general population of the United Kingdom. This fact surprised me because I expected the United Kingdoms population to be way higher due to them being a developed, stable country. Obesity in Nauru, and the United States also surprised me because I thought the United State had a high obesity rate but Nauru makes our obesity rate look small. I thought the United States had an extremely high Obesity rate which is pretty dangerous. Obesity kills lots of people which can cause the population to decrease. The last fact suprised me because most countries are dominant female instead of male. Being dominant in one gender could cause migration if countries are very sexist and hostile toward a certain gender. For example some Muslim countries are sexist towards women and do not let them get an education so they might migrate to the U.S. for education/better life.

- - Net Migration Rate: the difference between the number of person's entering and leaving a country during a year
- written as a positive number (not a negative number)
- example: Canada has 5.65 migrants per 1,000 population U.S. has 2.45 ( 3.62 in 2015)
- written as a negative number
- example: Mexico has -1.68 migrants per 1,000 population
- -3.61 two years ago, -3.11 last year

Life expectancy
- the average numbers of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year
- High: Monaco- (89.52 total: 85.63 men, 93.58 women
- #42 : U.S. - (79.68 total: 77.32 men, 81.97 women)
- Low: Chad- (49.81 total: 48.64 men, 51.03 women)
- crude birth rate: number of births per 1,000 of the population
- crude death rate: number of deaths per 1,000 of the population
- rate of natural increase (RNI)
- produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
- this gives us the annual natural growth rate- in percentage form- for a country or region
Don't forget about migration
Net migration Rate: the difference between number of person's entering and leaving a country during a span of 1 year
- Excess of persons entering the country is the net immigration

Today in class we did our unit test. The test was pretty easy but there was some hard questions mixed in there. I was not to happy with the result I received due to how long I studied and I still didn’t get a good grade. Next time we have a test I need to make sure I remember the key vocabulary. I feel that if I would have studied the vocabulary more I would have had a better result on the test. I got the vocabulary words mixed up with other words causing me to get a few questions wrong that Boulder have been wrong. Other than my test grade I really enjoyed my day, I did a make up day in Health, and I got good grades on all my other test’s and quizzes. I am looking forward to next week because I might get a couple shadows which is always fun.

Today in class we talked about the different types of religions practiced that make a certain point on Earth unique. First we talked about Islamic countries only being able to practice Islam and how there laws come straight out of the Quran while in the U.S. you can practice any religion but we have state laws and church laws. In the U.S we follow church laws which would be like the Ten Commandments but we still have to follow the laws put in place by the government. Even though we have church laws and state laws, the laws of the constitution branch off of the Ten Commandments like, “Thou shall not kill.” After we talked about the different religious laws and practices our class got off topic, we started talking about the different types of murder and how you could get charged with those different types of murder. I found it really interesting how you can get charged with murder so quickly. It mad me realize that you have to be really careful with everything you do because it could cost someone there life like drinking and driving. Overall, class today was very interesting.

Today in class we learned about location. Location can be identified in three ways, a places names, site, and situation.
Places names:
- a toponym is a name given to a place on Earth
- places names derived from religious affiliation, prominence, physics;l features, and origins of its settlers
Site:
- site is the physical characteristics of a place on Earth
- characteristics of site include climate, water source, topography, soil, elevation, and latitude
Situation:
- site is the physical characteristics of a place
- region
- area on Earth defined by 1 or more characteristics is considered region
- mostly defined at 2 scales
-Spanning political states
-Constrained within 1 political state
derives its unified characteristics through the cultural/religious landscape: Cultural landscape is the combo of cultural, religious, and physical landscape.

Test
Michael Proctor
10/2/18
Today in class we discussed our test grades. Overall I was a little unhappy with my grade because I forgot that we had a test coming up so I didn't study at all. Even though I got a bad grade, I will be sure to study and learn from the mistakes I have made. The test was overall easy but the questions about Socrates really threw me off. I aced the multiple choice but once I got to the Socrates writing problems I forgot it all. Next time we have a test I need to practice my test taking skills. Whenever we are about to have a test I get really nervous and it starts to throw me off so I need to work on staying calm, cool, and collective. I might have got a bad grade on this test but we have many more ahead of us. Now I know to study more, and make sure I stay calm before a test.

Applications
- Turn by turn directions in in vehicles
- Navigational aid to pilots
- Smart phones provide location for social media apps
Unique points on Earth
- A place is a specific point on Earth distinguished by particular characteristics
- Features of Earth requires geographers to distinguish similarities and differences across Earth
- Geographers describe a place on Earth by identifying its location, the position that something occupies.

Today was a fun day. We had a community bell today to explore groups and different organizations set up by students. A couple of the groups caught my eye like the fishing group, biking group, the gaming group, and the computer programming group. I would like to explore some of these groups so I can become more involved in the school and so I can develop different skills.
The second part of the assembly was voting for class presidents, downloading remind, and explaining the dress code for spirit week. Nominating the class president was pretty cool, we got to hear different perspectives from people and hear the different point of views for making the school better. Two of the people really caught my attention for class president, they brought fresh ideas and showed great leadership skills that could really lead us freshman in the right way. I can't wait to see who was nominated! Downloading remind was very helpful, it allows us to see when test are, when we have school closings, and when we have homework. This app is a great way to stay organized and keep our grades up to par. Lastly, hearing about the dress code was really important for dress down day and spirit week. If we did not get a talk about dress down day and spirit week I would probably be in Mr. Ireton's office when these events come around. Today was a very productive day!

Labeling Maps
Today in class we labeled maps. We labeled prime meridians, equator, continents, oceans, the nation of your origin, the international date line, the tropic of Capricorn, the tropic of Cancer, and the John Carroll School. It was a very chill fun class today and I really enjoyed labeling all the different maps.

How Do Geographers Describe Where Things Are?
2. Why are they found there?
Why is each point on Earth unique?
- Geography is the study where things are found on Earth's surface and the reasons for the locations.
- Human geographers ask two simple questions...
2. Why are they found there?
Why is each point on Earth unique?
- Each point has different cultures and land types.
- Nothing on Earth has the same features therefore it is unique in its own way.
Why are different places on Earth similar?
- Different places on Earth are similar due to globalization because people start something on an international scale spreading it around the world.
Why are some human interactions not sustainable?
- Some human interactions cannot be sustained because we use some resources like coal and gas at a pace much faster than it can be renewed meaning its not sustainable.

First Test
I thought the test was very good. The format of the test was very good and well written making the test pretty easy to do. I would suggest you give more room to right your essays though, other than that the test was fine.

My first days of school have went very good. I am really enjoying my new teacher's and making new friend's from all different school's. The staff at the school is very nice and the school is in immaculate condition. The environment is amazing and comfortable to learn in. I really love how all the teachers care and want their students to succeed so they can excel at learning and life skills. During these first days it has been really exciting to hang out and have fun with my teammates on and off the field going to games and practices. I love the family like connection with everyone in the school and I can't wait to spend my high school years at John Carroll.
